The Microsoft Office (And most other) clipboard managers simply retain the last few clips so that you can copy more than once before pasting. That functionality doesn't even scratch the surface of what Spartan can do!
You can save clips permanently. You can take (and edit ) screen shots. You can create clips which automatically include the system date and time. You can encrypt sensitive clips like your passwords and credit card details. You can paste any digital photo or graphic file on your PC simply by browsing to it and clicking a button - and you have the option to paste it in the format accepted by Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail which other clipboard managers do not offer. Best of all, if you have more than one PC, you can synchronize your clip data via Onedrive.
As well as a clipboard manager, you get a year planner, a graphics editor and a picture browser thrown in. Clips which are Web addresses work as bookmarks. Clips which are phone numbers will dial via your modem. Clips which are files on your PC work as shortcuts to them. It will remove email indentation chevrons from text. It will word wrap fixed line length text (Including the repair of hyphenated words) It even pastes text into old DOS programs! The list of uses for this software just goes on and on.

What do users say about Spartan?
Can't anything but
fall into the praise for this efficiency increasing tool! I am using Spartan
clipboard manager extensively and won't have a computer without. It is like
the English language: Very easy to start with and then finding a lot more
features under the hood. Of course everybody has his own style of working,
his own ideas of what is a good tool. For my way of thinking/working Spartan
clipboard manager is fitting like a glove, is like the toolbox of a craftsman:
The most used tools on top and those for special works thereunder.
If there is a problem the most impressive service reacts and acts FAST, efficient and generous. Spartan is one of the few tools I wholeheartedly recommend. Give it a try and you probably will be hooked.
I've used Spartan clipboard manager for 8 years and I have yet to find anything better. Excellent instructional videos. Watch them! Maybe not all at once, but at least the first 3 or 4, then as needed. Cool accent. (I'm just a dumb Yank - I think the owner hails from Scotland, but I'm not sure.)
Some reviewers don't like the old school look and feel of the program, but I find it refreshing and easy-to-use. Quick, clean, simple.
More functions than you could dream of, but if you don't need some of them, you're not bombarded with a bewildering mass of buttons and links like some programs. Just watch the videos to learn about the 'secret' functions.
You can press a button, go to your bank website (or other important financial site), and quickly login using encrypted data, which you set up and control. I'm not an expert, but it sure seems mighty secure, and for sure it's much more secure than the way most people keep their login info handy, e.g., in a text file titled, "bank username and password".
You have to spend a little time learning how to use the software, unlike easy-to-understand-from-the-start software such as Microsoft Word. ...
Yes, I'm being sarcastic. You have to spend a little time learning *any* software, so it's not really a 'con', just a jab at folks who whine that "It's too complicated." If you don't want to take 10 minutes to learn the basics, use the fabulous Windows clipboard!
The best clipboard manager for Windows.
Your product is one of the most productive ones that I have and saves me many hours of work. I have been involved in using computers since I wrote my first program in 1963 and your software is one of the most powerful and yet most user friendly ones that I have ever seen in these last 50 years.
I live on Spartan clipboard manager, use it all day everyday.
Thank you for your truly amazing Spartan clipboard manager. I have tried many clipboard manager programmes, free and paid for, but none come close to the abilities of your masterpiece. I particularly like the screen capture facility, so easy and intuitive. The video tutorials are also very well done, the dialogue is calm, clear and precise, no waffle. Of course, you know all this, but I am so pleased with this programme I just felt I ought to congratulate you. Thank you again.
Your Spartan clipboard manager is by far the most efficient and easiest program on the market. I have tested/checked about 50 other clipboard managers and found no one better. And the encryption upgrade made the distance to the second best even further.
Easy learning curve, good help file. Outstanding design in terms of reviewing words to paste - nice popup box with entire thread visible in box before pasting! I have tried 50+ clipboard utilities over the last few months in search of THIS!"
Of all the different programs I use, this is one that I use daily, all the time, it is that good and well worth the price."
Comparison of top Clipboard Managers
The Windows clipboard is OK, but if you're going for speed and efficiency, you'll need a clipboard manager for productivity. Let's take a closer look at six of the most popular clipboard managers.
We asked you to share
your favorite clipboard managers. You responded, demonstrating that just because
something is small and usually hidden from the end user doesn't mean it isn't
ripe for tinkering and improvement. Increase your efficiency and cut down
on the time you spend hunting for snippets of text with one of these great
Spartan (Windows, £19.99 & Freeware Light version)
Of all the clipboard managers, Spartan offers the greatest collection of specialty clipboard processing. For example, you can have clips you copy from Windows automatically combined into a single clip as you copy. You can have a single clip that pastes multiple items into separate cells in a spread sheet. You can have text you copy automatically injected into predefined phrases. You can edit and annotate screen shots. You can even paste text into old DOS programs! The real strength of Spartan lies in how quickly and easily you can find the clip you want. All the other clipboard managers present clips in a scrollable list. Spartan presents them in a spread sheet like grid so you can see up to 500 clips without scrolling.
ClipMate (Windows, $34.95)
ClipMate has many ways for you to interact with your collection of clippings. The Classic view gives you a toolbar with drop down options, the Explorer view—seen here—is the master management panel where you can group and edit your clippings, and finally the ClipBar integrates right into the Windows Task Bar to provide a quick access list to your frequently and most recently used clippings. ClipMate features encryption if you need to keep your clippings secure when not in use, advanced paste that supports structured data like tabs and delineation, and even in a built-in screen-capture tool with selective capture.
By itself ClipX is
a great clipboard manager capable of going portable with a simple command
line argument. You can assign hotkeys to primary and secondary pastes off
your clipboard log, but you can't assign a hotkey to a specific phrase. ClipX
supports both text and image cutting and pasting. There are around a half
dozen plugins for ClipX that provide additional functionality like clipboard
search, a color picker that automatically dumps the color values into your
clipboard, and a plugin that adds sticky clipboard entries you want to keep
close at hand.
CLCL (Windows, Freeware)
If you've looked over some of the other clipboard managers and found them a bit overpowered for your needs, take a look at CLCL. It's an excellent compromise between the inadequate default clipboard and the advanced every-bell-and-whistle clipboard managers. CLCL allows you to access your clipboard history with a simple press of ALT+C or from the icon in the system tray. Frequently used clippings can be saved to the Templates category, and you can customize the paste hotkey based on the program you're using to avoid conflicts and set specify windows to ignore. Beyond that CLCL doesn't have a whole lot more functionality, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It stores the clippings you want, retrieves them with a simple keystroke-summoned menu, and is light on your system resources.
ArsClip (Windows, Freeware)
ArsClip is a lightweight and portable. It supports and stores pictures, formatted text, Unicode, and HTML. You can edit your clippings to include key stroke emulation to paste text into forms and other complex arrangements. ArsClip also supports switching between groups based on the program. If you only use a certain set of clippings while editing your blog, for instance, you can set them to only appear when you're active in Firefox. In addition to support for images, ArsClip also supports files, allowing you to store frequently used/pasted files right in ArsClip.
Ditto (Windows, Freeware)
Ditto is a portable clipboard manager with a hefty feature list. Not only does Ditto support plain text, but it can also copy formatting and even images. You can search your stored text clippings and synchronize multiple copies of Ditto together to update your clippings across computers. Ditto has full unicode support, so you can paste foreign and non-standard characters without a problem. You can group together your clippings to keep things organized by task or project, as well as assign hotkeys to frequently used clippings. On top of the user-defined hotkeys, Ditto sports over a dozen built-in hotkeys for entering, searching, and retrieving your clippings.
Now that you've had a chance to look over the contenders for the best clipboard manager, it's time to cast your vote:
Never used a clipboard manager before? Inspired to try one because of this list? Shocked your favorite didn't make the cut? Sound off in the comments.
I've been testing
Ditto, ArsClip, and ClipX for about half an hour now, and they all seem to
work pretty much the same way (at least, for the use I'll give them, not too
However, I noticed a very noticeable difference in their memory usage.
Ditto- 5500KB, give or take 1000KB
ArsClip- 5500KB, give or take 1000KB
ClipX- 550KB, give or take 100KB
Note that these are values taken with all of them without any items on the clipboard (their clipboards flushed).
With several items on each, they remained around those values closer to the higher limit of course.
Thanks for the input. It was several years ago when I checked them all out so things may have changed since then. But I don't think I ever looked into their memory usage either. Maybe I'll revisit ClipX, but to tell you the truth I'm so happy with Spartan right now I don't see a reason to switch.
I am shocked, shocked there's no mention of ClipCache. As a programmer I find it indispensable.
Before I tried Ditto which was hard to persuade to paste what it saved. Spartan is much smoother. Great program.
You should include Shapeshifter into the list as well.
AMAZING. I've been
using ClipCycler for a while and while it is better than the Windows clipboard
manager, it's still very, very basic IMO.
Shapeshifter looks good, kudos to the developers. It's even better than what I've been looking for.
BTW, are you the guy from the video? Cause I noticed the user being named Mathy.
Anyways, thank you for sharing this great looking piece of software, can't wait to try it out.
Hey, me again. I
just installed Shapeshifter after installing .Net Framework 4 and rebooting,
but after supposedly being installed succesfully, when I try to run Shapeshifter,
a bubble comes up saying "Shapeshifter has encountered an error. If you know
what caused this error, please contact Flamefusion."
I don't know what caused the error...
Also, Shapeshifter didn't create a desktop shortcut as requested.
Any ideas? I was looking forward to trying out Shapeshifter so I hope there's a fix soon.
What? Has no one
insisted they use pen and paper as their clipboard manager yet? 6/21/09 5:20pm
If one is willing to spend a bit of time on the learning curve, Clipmate is amazing. I must use it 20-50 or more times a day. One can use it not only as a clipboard, but also in a myriad of other ways. For example rather than write a small program to pick up names and telephones from records in one program and write them into another non-compatible one, one can just quick copy the list one by one and then do a sequential paste into the data recipient. The uses go on and on.
Why don't you use Lastpass, or some other password manager for that? Is the data on the clipboard encrypted?
